EVERGREEN STATE 3, MULTNOMAH 1: Geoducks Slide Past Lions with First-Half Goals
PORTLAND, Ore. –
Marcus Krause ended Multnomah University's five-game scoreless streak with a first-half score, but the visiting Evergreen State College Geoducks got three goals of their own in the opening period for a 3-1 victory over the Lions in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer match Saturday evening here at Delta Park.
Evergreen dented the scoreboard first in the 23
rd minute when a corner kick was punched away by Multnomah keeper
Manuel Guillermo-Olivares, only to have Ryan Mulnick settle the rebound and send it back into the net for the score. Kevin Elliott-McCrea made it 2-0 in the 31
st minute with a shot from the right from six yards out following a free kick cross from Esau Vazquez.
Krause snapped the Lions' scoring drought with his first goal of the season in the 37
th minute, collecting a through ball from
Noe Favila and beating Evergreen goalie Ben Stevenson one-on-one to halve the Geoducks' lead. However, that goal was offset by an insurance score by Evergreen's Angel Trejo-Delgado, who snuck one inside the left post with an assist by Josiah Pacheco in the 40
th minute.
The game was evenly contested, Evergreen managing 14 shots to 11 for Multnomah and nine on goal to five for the home team. The Lions controlled the second half with seven shots to three for the Geoducks but were unable to knock any home to draw closer in the score.
Guillermo-Olivares had six saves for Multnomah and Stevenson had four for Evergreen. Krause led all attackers with five shots, while Trejo-Delgado and Issa Hassan had four attempts each for Evergreen. The game was also a physical one, with 20 whistles blown on Evergreen, 17 on Multnomah, and a total of eight yellow cards handed out.
Multnomah is now 2-10 overall and 0-8 in the CCC, while Evergreen State improved to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.
--- Quoting Coach Tom Stephens: "I liked the way we controlled play in the second half; we got twice as many shots as they did but just couldn't cash in. We gave up some unlucky goals in the first half but held our own and never gave up. We're still a young team that is improving game by game and coming together as a group."
