REDDING, Calif. – Led by Jordan Woodvine's 25 points, the Corban University women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the young 2017-18 campaign, defeating William Jessup University in a one-point thriller, 70-69.
"We played a tough-fought game tonight and came out on top," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Our team was unified and made good adjustments on the fly. William Jessup is a very well-coached team with a lot of versatility. We were able to keep running them and the production we got in scoring and rebounding from Lindsay, Jordan Woodvine, and Emily was incredible."
Woodvine led the way with the big offensive evening, but it was a total team effort, as the Warriors got great performances from players all over the court, both offensively and defensively.
After falling behind by seven points, 22-15, after the first quarter, the Warriors scored 15 points again in the second quarter while holding William Jessup to just nine points, locking down defensively. A tightly-contested third stanza sent the Warriors to the fourth quarter trailing by two points.
Down the stretch, it was back and forth on both sides, and for the Warriors, Woodvine came up big with back-to-back buckets in the paint to put the Warriors up 67-66 with just over a minute left. The Navy and Gold nailed some clutch free throws in the final 60 seconds, and ultimately held on for the one-point triumph.
Woodvine's 25 points came on a 9-for-17 shooting effort from the floor to go with nine rebounds. Emily Yost added 14 points for the Warriors in the victory, shooting 6-for-10 from the field, and she also racked up nine boards. Additionally, Lindsay Asplund hit double-digits with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Maci Bozett dished out five assists and Treasure Farmer recorded a team-best six assists.
As a team, Corban shot 41.5% from the floor and 20.0% from deep.
"Maci and Treasure were great on both ends of the floor and in assists," said Skyles. "Our bench play and energy was great as well. I'm so glad we had a battle and came out victorious against a very good team."
Corban (2-0) returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Menlo College. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. in Redding.
