VALLEJO, Calif. – The NU Eagles suffered their third straight loss as they fell to Cal Maritime, 85-80, in the Keelhaulers’ tournament tonight.

Despite out shooting and out rebounding the Keelhaulers, 26 costly and untimely turnovers may have proved to be the difference in the game. The Eagles shot an impressive 55% from the field and 50% from the 3-point loss and held a 38-35 edge in rebounding.

Cal Maritime took a 44-41 lead at halftime with Josh Hauser scoring 18 of his 25 points in the half hitting key baskets throughout the period. Hauser hit 4 out of 5 3-pointers in the half to help give CSUM the lead.

The second half would be closely played the entire way with neither team able to put much distance between the teams. NU would have numerous opportunities to tie or take the lead, but would be unable to do so as turnovers would be their nemesis a good part of the half.

Christian Hakilimali had a breakout game for Northwest U (4-3) with a season high 25 points on 10 for 14 shooting from the field. Hakilimali added 8 rebounds, a team high. Freshman Jas Singh followed up a 17 point effort from last night with 18 points and 6 rebounds while Tanner Davis was held to just 8 points after an 18 point in last night’s contest.

Five Cal Maritime (5-1) players scored in double figures including Hauser’s 25. Phil Randles dropped in 15 points while Zavier Lucero, Mike Meserole and Brandon Morse all score 12 for the Keelhaulers. CSUM shot 40% for the game, 36% from beyond the 3-point line and was 79% from the free throw line (15-19)

“While I was pleased with how hard the team played tonight, we have to clean up the turnovers and take better care of the ball,” said Jeff Drinkwine, interim head coach. “We did just about everything else well and if not for the 26 turnovers, there might have been a different outcome to the game. We’ll get back to practice and work to improve, and get our injured players back on the court soon.”
