SALEM, Ore. – The NU men’s basketball built and 11 point halftime lead on their way to an 87-79 non-league victory over Portland Bible College in the final game of the Corban Tournament today. Freshman Tanner Davis led the Eagles with 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

In the first half, Justice Martion took a pass from Christian Hakilimali for dunk for a27-17 NU lead at the 8:46 mark.  PBC’s Aaron Deatherage would cut that lead in half with his driving lay-up with 6:55 left in the half to make it a 27-22 game. Davis would give the Eagles a 7 point, 34-27 lead with a drive to the basket at 3:45. PBC would go 0-5 and turn the ball over twice in the final 2:13 as the Eagles would outscore them 6-0 to go up 42-31 as Josh Meyer’s driving lay-up at the buzzer would finish the scoring.

With 10 minutes to go in the second half, Northwest U would build their lead to 18, their largest of the game on a 3-pointer by Nick Navarro (65-47).  NU would maintain their lead for most of the half and with 3:22 to go in the game Justice Martion would sink two free throws to make it an 80-63 game. The Eagles would go 4 for 6 from the free throw line down the stretch to post their fifth win of the season.

In addition to Tanner Davis’ 21 points, Northwest U (5-4) got 14 points from Justice Martion and 12 points each from Nick Navarro and Christian Hakilimali. NU hit 11 of 24 3-point attempts for 46% and shot 46% for the game overall. The Eagles dominated the backboards with a 49-34 rebounding margin.

For Portland Bible (1-6), Kenese Peneueta score 18 points and added 7 rebounds. Aaron Deatherage added 16 points and William Bratcher scored 14. PBC was held to 29% shooting from the 3-point line.

“I was pleased with our effort tonight and the way we took care of the ball,” said Jeff Drinkwine, NU head coach. “It was good to have Nick Navarro back in the line-up for only his second game this season and he gave us some solid minutes. Tanner Davis picked up the slack in rebounding since we were missing Jas Singh tonight. It was a good team effort and 15 assists indicates we’re sharing the ball.”
