Vallejo, Calif. – A night after a Northern California wildfire prevented NCU from making their scheduled game against Simpson, the Lady Beacons rode their stellar defense to a 75-36 win against California State University Maritime in a non-conference matchup.
NCU’s ferocious backcourt held the home side to a .239 field-goal percentage in the game, keeping the Keelhaulers to under five points in both the first and third quarters. The three CSUM scored in the first is good for the second fewest points allowed in a quarter in program history.
Northwest Christian (2-0) had a strong offensive showing as well, shooting 44% from the field and just under 43% from long-range. The Beacons had 11 players register points in the contest, a testament to the teams unselfish play and patience with finding a high-percentage shot.
Head Coach Heath Alexander was pleased with how his squad played and distributed the ball in the victory. “It was a good team win. It’s early in the year, and we have a lot to work on in regards to being disciplined and playing without fouling, but I was really happy with the way we shared the ball.”
Freshman Morgan McKinney led the Beacons in scoring with 14, shooting 60% while also snagging six boards. Niki Duncan played well on both sides, dropping 13 points with six steals. Duncan went five-for-eight total, good for 62.5%, including two buckets from distance. Anamaria Virjoghe and Conner Borigo each had nine points for NCU.
CSUM (1-2) got into a bit of a rhythm late in the game, out-scoring the Beacons 18-15 in the fourth. Samantha Jones and Melanie Henderson were tops in scoring with seven points each.
NCU continues their California road-trip on Friday when they play Pacific Union College at 1 p.m.
