Geoducks Lose Opener at Puget Sound
TACOMA, Wash. - Jaurence Chisholm and Dustin Meade both recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds Wednesday night but it wasn't enough to prevent The Evergreen State College from losing to Puget Sound, 92-80, in the men's basketball opener for both teams at Memorial Fieldhouse.
The Geoducks shot 58 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Loggers, 50-41, but in the end were undone by 31 turnovers that led to 27 Puget Sound points. Turnovers were a special problem in the first half as Evergreen turned it over 17 points in falling behind 49-39, at the break.
Chisholm, Evergreen's 6-10 senior center, tallied 13 points and 15 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive end. He added seven assists, five blocks and two steals to his outstanding line. Meade, a 6-4 senior guard/forward, came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 11 rebounds, including nine of the defensive variety. Junior guard Pat Ling led the Geoducks with 17 points, while junior forward Ryan Quigley contributed 13 points and eight rebounds in the losing cause.
Evergreen shot 29-for-50 from the field but just 1-for-6 from beyond the three-point line, and it was 21-for-32 from the foul line.
Puget Sound expanded its 10-point halftime lead to 62-49 early in the second half before the Geoducks cut their deficit to three points at 65-62 with about 10 minutes to play. After that, however, the Loggers were able to keep the visitors at bay.
Jimmy Wohrer scored 26 points for the home team.
These two same teams face each other again in two days when Puget Sound hosts Evergreen at 8 p.m. Friday as part of the Doug McArthur Classic.
