SALEM, Ore. – The No. 25-ranked Northwest Christian University women's basketball team registered big second and fourth quarters on Tuesday en route to an 85-69 win over the Corban University women's basketball team. For both teams, it was the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) opener.
"Our team showed glimpses of greatness tonight," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles, "but you have can't just have moments against a great team – you have to compete for 40 minutes. We dug ourselves a hole once again and fought back only to make decisions that didn't help us finish the comeback."
NCU owned the one-point lead after quarter one, but a 25-13 edge in the second quarter gave the Beacons the 13-point lead at the break. Corban cut the deficit to just eight points headed into the fourth quarter, and the Warriors even cut the Beacon lead to four points midway through the final stanza, but NCU proved to be clutch down the stretch, making the key shots, while Corban was unable to convert.
In the win for the Beacons, Morgan McKinney tallied a team-leading 20 points on an 8-for-12 shooting mark, while Niki Duncan tallied 19 points. In addition, Anamaria Virjoghe totaled 17 points with eight rebounds and six blocks, while Katerina Brejchova record 15 points and 13 rebounds.
For the Warriors, Corban was led by Emily Yost with 20 points on a 9-for-12 shooting mark, while Jordan Woodvine totaled 18 points for Corban to go with a team-leading eight boards. In addition, Maci Bozett nailed four shots from deep and scored 16 points, while no one else reached double-figures.
"Positively, Emily had a really strong performance and we shot well from the line, as a team," said Skyles. "Jordan Woodvine had some big moments and rebounded the ball well. We have some soul searching to do and changes need to be made to became the team I know we can become."
NCU (8-0, 1-0 CCC) remains undefeated on the year, while Corban (2-4, 0-1 CCC) is set to head to Walla Walla this weekend for a pair of games against the Walla Walla University Wolves. Tipoff on Saturday is slated for 6 p.m. and for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
