No. 7 EOU Women’s Hoops Opens Season with 70-52 Victory over Bethesda

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The EOU women’s basketball team shot 45.5 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from Bethesda en route to a 70-52 triumph Friday afternoon in the opening game of the 11th annual Bill Holtz Classic at Warrior Arena.
 
Junior guard Maya Ah You-Dias led a trio of Mounties in double-digit scoring as she stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, five assists and seven boards. Right behind her was newcomer Maren Herrud with 12 points, while senior forward Stormee Van Belle nabbed the only double-double in the contest dropping 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Briah Nelson scored a game-high 30 points for the Flames with nine boards. Taylor Smalley chipped in 11 points and four assists.

Under six minutes of the opening first quarter, EOU (1-0) held a 10-3 advantage over BU (0-4) after senior sharp shooter Payton Parrish knocked down a triple. The Flames would trim the deficit to three points at the 3:42 mark, but the Mounties capped of the period going on an 8-3 run to lead, 20-12, after one.

The second period proved to be a struggle on offense for both teams as EOU managed to outscore BU 11-8, going 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in the last minute to head into the intermission with an 11-point lead, 30-21.

In the third period, EOU used a 14-7 run capped off by back-to-back buckets from senior forward Mariah Swanson to take an 18-point (45-27) lead with over two minutes remaining in the stanza.

The Blue and Gold opened the final period with a pair of free throws from Belle, while Ah You-Dias scored 7 of her 13 points in a 55 second stretch to swell the lead 27 at the 6:05 mark. EOU capped off the period with 24 points and limited the Flames to 20 in the 18-point victory.
