No. 12 Raiders Pull Away to Defeat Eagles
KIRKLAND, Wash. – No. 12 Southern Oregon pulled away at the end to defeat Northwest University, 71-52, in Cascade Conference play tonight. For the Eagles, it was also the end of final exams and the start of the semester break for the student body.
Northwest U would take a 10-9 lead in a low scoring first quarter, but Southern Oregon would go on a 15-4 run to start the second quarter to lead 24-14 with 6 minutes left in the half. NU would cut the SOU lead to 11, 34-23, with 1:23 to go, but SOU would outscore the Eagles 5-2 down the stretch to lead at halftime, 39-25.
Kalee Fowler’s single free throw would narrow the Raider lead to 59-42 with 1:10 left in the third quarter, but a 3-pointer by SOU’s Casey Williams would give the Raiders a 53-42 lead to end the period.
The Raiders would slowly pull away in the final period and with 5:19 to go in the game, Williams would hit a jumper to give Southern Oregon their largest lead of the game, 64-46. NU could not get any closer as Delaney Sparling’s 3-pointer would lift SOU to the 71-52 victory.
Northwest U (4-7, 1-2 CCC) was led by Hannah Carlson’s 12 points. Miranda Langenhorst scored 8 points and pulled down 9 rebounds before leaving the game with an injury. The SOU pressing defense forced 33 Eagle turnovers while NU out rebounded SOU 42-37.
Remi Mejia led Southern Oregon (9-1, 2-1 CCC) with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Casey Williams added 16 points and 7 rebounds while the Raiders shot 36% for the game.
