SALEM, Ore. – A big fourth quarter led the Corban University women's basketball team to a come-from-behind victory on Tuesday night in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, as the Warriors defeated William Jessup University, 62-55. The triumph gives Corban the season sweep of William Jessup, having already defeated WJU on the road earlier in the year.
"It was a great team win today against a very tough opponent," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "I'm super proud of the girls for making the adjustments we needed to make to win the game in the fourth quarter. Em and JW had another great game and Maci shot the ball really well in the first half. Overall, our players performed when they needed to. It feels good going into the break with a win and winning five out of the last six games gives us some momentum going into break."
One of the big keys to the game was Corban's ability to convert on second-chance opportunities, and in particular, in the fourth quarter, the Warriors scored 10 second-chance points. For the game, Corban allowed just one second-chance point for William Jessup, limiting the extra opportunities for the visitors.
Heading into the fourth quarter trailing, 47-43, Corban used a 12-6 run to begin the final stanza, and from that point on, the Warriors never looked back en route to closing out another key non-conference win.
Corban played lock down defense on the night, holding WJU to just a 34.5% shooting mark and only a 3-for-11 effort from downtown. In addition, the visitors shot just 14-of-21 from the charity stripe.
On the other end as a team, Corban shot 46.2% overall and dished out 14 assists. Leading the way offensively was Emily Yost with 15 points on a 7-for-11 shooting mark, while Maci Bozett tallied 12 points. In addition, Jordan Woodvine landed in double-figures with 10 points to go along with her eight boards.
For William Jessup (8-6), Miranda Zaragoza totaled a team-high 16 points on a 6-for-11 shooting effort, while Lily Hagerty recorded 10 points in the loss.
Corban (7-5) returns to the hardwood after Christmas when the Warriors host Northwest University on December 29. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
