Geoducks Fall to Portland Bible, 65-61
Visiting Portland Bible College outscored The Evergreen State College by eight points over the final 6:41 of the game Friday night in taking a 65-61 non-conference men’s basketball win at Costantino Recreation Center.
The Wildcats (3-10) trailed 55-51 following a short bank shot by Evergreen’s Malik Redmond with 6:41 on the clock and the by 57-54 following a Jaurence Chisholm layup with 4:41 to play. Portland Bible’s next two trips down the floor resulted in three-point baskets by Cameron Jensen and the visitors led, 60-57.
The Geoducks (1-12) went back on top at 61-60 by scoring the next four points on a Quinton Whitfield free throw and Dustin Meade three-pointer, but Jensen drained his third three-pointer in the closing minutes to put the visitors on top for good.
After Evergreen missed twice on the offensive end, Keoni Peneueta hit a short jumper as the shot clock buzzer sounded to give the Wildcats a 65-61 edge with 14 seconds to play. Evergreen missed a three-point attempt at the other end and Portland Bible held on for the victory.
The Wildcats won the game with excellent long-range shooting, going 13-for-25 (56 percent) from beyond the three-point line, including 6-for-9 in the second half. Troy Woodward came off the bench to shoot 5-for-6 from beyond the arc on the way to a game-high 21 points, while Jensen was 4-for-10 from outside in scoring 16 points. Peneueta, 3-for-5 from three-point land, scored 11 points in a reserve role.
Portland Bible shot 42 percent as a team and took just two free throws, making one of those. Point guard William Bratcher dished out a game-high nine assists.
Evergreen shot 44 percent overall (22-for-50), including a season-best 53 percent from beyond the three-point line (9-for-17). Pat Ling scored a team-high 13 points, while Meade was 4-for-7 from long range in tallying 12 points. Ryan Quigley and Jaurence Chisholm both scored 10 points and Quigley led the Geoducks to a 35-29 rebounding edge by grabbing a game-high eight boards.
The Geoducks return to Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday, Dec. 29, when they play Northwest Christian in Eugene, Ore.
