Wolves Comeback Comes up Short Against Warriors
College Place, Wash. – The Wolves started off slow with Corban University Warriors taking a first-half lead. The Warriors remained in the lead, after several comeback attempts from Walla Walla. The Warriors took a hard-fought win 67-49.
A free-throw by Michaela Garcia put the Wolves in the lead 1-0 to start the game. With seven minutes left in the quarter, the Warriors scored their first basket. Followed by a layup soon after by Maci Bozett for Corban. Bozett followed her own layup with a 3, making the score 9-1 with 5 minutes remaining in the quarter.
Corban's Abby Forsyth scored a layup with 3:40 left on the clock, and Walla Walla's Sarah Halversen responded by getting to the line, hitting four straight free-throws after back-to-back fouls. The Warriors Treasure Farmer hit a three to extend the lead to the lead to 15-5 over the Wolves.
As the quarter was winding down, Michaela Garcia stole the ball and took the ball the length of the court for a jump shot to close the gap to six points. Walla Walla went seven of eight from the line in the first quarter but found themselves down 9 to 17 after the first quarter.
After trading baskets back-and-forth in the second quarter, Alyssa Blankenship banked a 3 for Walla Walla with 4 minutes left in the game. With one minute left in the game, Chamberlain hit a three for the Wolves. With 3 seconds left in the half, Halversen made a layup for Walla Walla and the Wolves went into the locker room trailing 27-20.
Walla Walla couldn't capitalize on several fast break opportunities early in the third quarter. The Warriors recovered quickly and steadily increased their lead. Corban's Emily Yost made a layup with six minutes left on the clock and teammate Hannah Shore hit a three to extend the lead to 37-20.
With 5 minutes left in the game, Blankenship powered through the defense for back-to-back layups. Stanyer scored two free-throws for Walla Walla, and Halversen made a layup with 2 seconds left in the quarter to make the score 47-28 heading into the fourth.
Emily Downs started the Lady Wolves off with a layup 30 seconds into the fourth quarter. Montes followed with a breakaway down the court and layup for the Wolves, and Halverson followed soon after. With 5:31 minutes left in the game, the Wolves had cut the lead to 8 points after a three-pointer by Blankenship.
Walla Walla was unable to get any closer, and Corban extended their lead back to double digits, winning the game, 67-49. Leading scorers for Walla Walla was Sarah Halversen with 11 points and 3 rebounds, Alyssa Blankenship with 10 points, and Kai Chamberlain with 9 points.
