Portland State Barely Gets by Eagles
PORTLAND, Ore. – NCAA Division I Portland State was forced to come from behind in the final 3 minutes of the game to pull out a narrow, 63-60, victory over Northwest University in an afternoon exhibition game today.
Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the Eagles fell behind early 10-2 at the 6 minute mark of the first quarter. With 22 seconds to go in the period, PSU’s Sidney Rielly would lay the ball in for a 16-6 Viking lead as the clock would run out.
The Eagles would catch fire to start the second quarter and Andie Kristinat’s 3-pointer would ignite a 19-5 NU run which Kalee Fowler would cap off with her 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 28-19 lead with 3:17 left in the half. Portland State would cut the NU lead to four, 28-24 at the 1:58 mark, but Hannah Carlson’s jumper with 4 seconds on the clock would give NU a 32-24 halftime lead. The Eagles would force 10 PSU turnovers with Mariah Stacona making 6 takeaways.
A 5-0 start in the third period would give Northwest U a 37-26 after another Kristinat trey at 8:14. With NU leading 39-30, the Vikings would go on a 9-0 run to tie the score at 39-all after Kiana Brown’s 3-pointer with 2:10 left in the quarter. But, 5 straight points by the Eagles would give them a 44-41 lead as the buzzer sounded to end the quarter.
In the final period, Northwest U would maintain their lead until the 3:09 mark when Sidney Rielly’s basket would cut NU’s lead to one, 56-55. A PSU steal would lead to a Rielly lay-up, putting the Vikings up for the first time since the first quarter. NU would miss two scoring opportunities, but PSU would not as Kylie Jimenez would hit a crucial 3-pointer and a lay-up to give PSU a 62-56 lead with 1:52 remaining. NU would not go away easily and a 4-0 Eagle run would cut the PSU led to 62-60 at 1:04. The Eagles Kalee Fowler would come up with a steal with 34 seconds to go, but the Vikings would get it right back with a steal and a single free throw by Portland State would make it a 63-60 game with 9 seconds remaining. With one more chance to score, Andie Kristinat’s 3-point attempt would miss the mark as the buzzer would sound.
The freshman Kristinat led Northwest U with 16 points. Hannah Carlson score 13 points with 7 assists while Miranda Langenhorst scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Mariah Stacona had 8 points, 5 assists and 7 steals for the Eagles who out rebounded the Vikings 43-39 with 15 offensive rebounds.
Portland State (4-5) shot 47% in the second half and was led by Ashley Bolston’s 17 points. Sidney Rielly added 16 points for the Vikings who shot 39% for the game.
