Jarett Thoren (JT) - Corban provides the perfect blend of challenge in spiritual, academic, and athletic disciplines. The small, tight-knit community on campus excels in providing growth in all areas of life.
CCC- What are some of the demands of being a student athlete?
JT- Time management and self-discipline. There are so many things that a student-athlete can’t take part in because of his or her responsibilities as a part of a team, and it’s something most people don’t realize comes along with being an athlete. There is a lot of sacrifice and discipline involved with succeeded both on the field and in the classroom.
CCC- What are some of your best experiences so far, both academically and athletically at college?
JT- Traveling with the Corban Baseball team to Cuba for the past two years has definitely been a standout experience. Being able to participate in the culture there, witness to and serve the people there, and become one of the first college baseball teams to play on Cuban soil was something special.
CCC- Who are some influential people in your life at Corban?
JT- Obviously my teammates, my roommates, and Coach McKay has had a large role in my life, but the professors and staff on campus are so intentional about impacting students’ lives that there are numerous people who have had huge influence on my journey. Danny Day, our SID, has modeled service and exceptional work ethic, I’ve had the privilege of traveling overseas with some of our faculty, it really is a fantastic place to learn and grow.
CCC- When not competing or studying what do you do for fun?
JT- I love exploring, and there is so much to see around the Pacific Northwest. Whether it’s a day hike to Opal Creek, camping overnight at the base of Three Fingered Jack or the Three Sisters, or exploring downtown Portland, I love to venture out and see new things.
CCC- What do you hope to accomplish as a member of the CCC-SAAC?
JT- It’s awesome to get to be a part of the CCC-SAAC and see how things work and how I can be a part of generating new ideas. I hope to be a voice for any concerns or ideas that the Corban campus has, and to be a dependable representative of the university’s athletics. But more importantly, I hope to be able to help in the process of consistently finding ways to improve the CCC in order to maintain the level of excellence the conference has established.
CCC- What do you see yourself doing after graduation?
JT- I hope to spend some time overseas doing mission work, and proceeding to attain a Masters in Sports Management. The ultimate goal is to become an Athletic Director at a small university similar to those in the CCC.
