Women’s Basketball Tournament Presented by U.S. Bank Begins Tonight
LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference will kick off the start of the 2016-17 Women’s Basketball Championship presented by U.S. Bank later today with four quarterfinal games at various campus sites throughout the conference. No. 8 Multnomah (8-20, 6-14 CCC) at No. 1 Southern Oregon (25-3, 18-2 CCC)
7 p.m. PST – Ashland, Ore. (Ashland H.S.)
Top-seeded and regular season Co-Champion Southern Oregon kicks of their quarterfinal match at home as they host newcomer eighth-seed Multnomah. The Raiders claimed the No. 1 seed after being tied with Eastern Oregon through every tiebreaker up to a coin toss. SOU lost the toss and the first of two AQ’s to the NAIA National Tournament but, in doing so, gained the opportunity to be at home throughout the conference postseason.
Southern led the conference in points per game at 83.2 and held the third ranked defense, giving up 60.5 points per game. Autumn Durand leads the Raiders with a conference high 16.9 points per game while ranking third in rebounding averaging at 8 per game.
Multnomah, a recent addition to the CCC membership, makes their first ever appearance in the CCC post season after defeating The Evergreen State College on Saturday night. The win secured the tiebreaker over TESC as MU had a critical road win over Corban earlier in the season. The Lions are led by Miranda Schmillen who averages a team high 14.6 points, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.
No. 7 Corban (14-14, 8-12 CCC) at No. 2 Eastern Oregon (25-4, 18-2 CCC)
7 p.m. PST – La Grande, Ore. - Quinn Coliseum
Seventh-seeded Corban heads east to second-seed Eastern Oregon to battle a Mountaineer team on a ten game winning streak.
Eastern Oregon shares the regular season championship with SOU and won the coin flip to determine seeding. With the coin flip going the Mountaineers way they locked up the first AQ to the NAIA National Tournament but were seeded second. EOU averages 75.4 points per game and are second in best defense, giving up only 55.2 points a game. They are tops in the CCC in rebounding averaging 43 an outing. Maya Ah You Dias leads the way in scoring at 13.0 per game while Payton Parrish leads the league in shooting percentage from 3-point land at .466.
Corban is led by Maddey Pflaumer and Sadie Pilgeram who both rank in the top twenty in scoring and rebounding. Pflaumer averages 16.6 points and 7.2 boards while Pilgeram averages 11 points and 6.1 rebounds. As a team Corban is sixth in scoring at 68.2 and trails only EOU in rebounding at 42.7 a game.
No. 6 Northwest (15-15, 10-10 CCC) at No. 3 Oregon Tech (23-7, 16-4 CCC)
7 p.m. PST – Klamath Falls, Ore.- Danny Miles Court
Winners of two of the last four CCC tournaments (2013-14,2014-15) Oregon Tech enters as the No. 3 seed this year.
Oregon Tech allows the fewest points scored at 55 while holding the third highest scoring offense in the CCC at 70.2. The Lady Owls hold a +8.4 margin rebounding over their opponents with Morgan Roberts-ILI averaging 7.4 per game. Standout Ashlei Vandenbrink leads the way offensively averaging 13.5 points per game.
Northwest enters the playoffs on a five game winning streak, defeating Warner Pacific and Multnomah in the final games of the year. The Eagles are led by reigning Red Lion Player of the Week Miranda Langenhorst who leads the conference in rebounding at 9.3 per game and scores at a 11.4 point per game clip.
No. 5 College of Idaho (12-14, 12-8 CCC) at No. 4 Northwest Christian (17-10, 14-6 CCC)
7 p.m. PST – Eugene, Ore.- Morse Event Center
The College of Idaho will travel to Eugene and try to change their fortunes after being swept by Northwest Christian during the regular season.
The Yotes rank fourth in the conference in points scored per game with 69.8 while the Beacons hold the edge over CI in defense, giving up 67.3 points per contest. Northwest Christian is again the top blocking team in the CCC, totaling 109 blocks thanks to Hanna Mack (52) who is second in the conference
CI is led by Petra Lumpert who is fourth in the CCC scoring with 15.8 points per game and leads the league in assists at 4.8 per game.
Tuesday's winners advance to the conference tournament semifinals on Friday night at the campus sites of the top two remaining seeds.
