PHOENIX, Ariz. – With Devery Stewart leading the way, the No. 23-ranked Corban University men's golf team opened the spring portion of the 2016-17 campaign against some of the most challenging competition in the NAIA on Monday and Tuesday, taking eighth place overall at the Firestorm Spring Invitational.

"Playing against elite level competition in February was a good wake-up call for what our guys might face if they make the postseason this May," said Corban head coach Tom Graves. "We had a lot of rust to shake off from the long off-season, and a lot of our weaknesses were exposed throughout the tournament. We'll work hard in the next week and a half to get ready for our home match play event!"

RESULTS

While playing at the Moon Valley CC, the Warriors showed improvement in each round, notching team scores of 304, 302, and 298 for the eighth-place total of 904. Corban finished one stroke ahead of No. 7-ranked University of Victoria (B.C.) and competed against 14 total teams at the tournament.

Stewart led the way and showed consistency, recording rounds of 73, 72, and 72 to tie for seventh overall among 78 total golfers. Warrior rookie Isaac Calderon finished tied for 38th overall with a three-round score of 228 (78, 77, 73), improving with each round he played.

Rounding out Corban's scorers were Aaron Seabrook at 230 (75, 73, 82), Landon Joy at 235 (78, 80, 77), and Kasey Crossland at 237 (81, 80, 76).

Also golfing for the Warriors, as an individual, was Alex Cole, and Cole finished tied for 57th overall with Joy, as Cole totaled a three-round mark of 235 (81, 79, 75).

Corban returns to the course on March 4-5 when it hosts the Capital City Match Play event in Salem. The tournament will take place all day both days at the Creekside Golf Club.
