LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Corban University men’s basketball team has been named “Team of the Week” for February 20-26, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced Sunday.

The Warriors, led by first year head coach Austin Johnson, entered the 2016-17 men’s basketball conference tournament as the No. 8 seed and have proceeded to shake up the tournament and the record book.

In the quarterfinal round Corban made the short trip down I-5 to take on the No. 1 seeded and regular season champions 6th ranked Northwest Christian. For only the third time in the 17-year history of the CCC tourney a No. 8 upset a No. 1 as the Warriors dominated from the start of the contest and came home with a convincing 105-76 victory.

Never before has an 8 seed, or for that matter, a 7 seed, that won in the quarterfinals advanced passed the semifinal game. While history was against them, the Warriors were not satisfied, as they went on the road and upset No. 2 and 13th ranked Eastern Oregon 100-90 to advance to the tournament championship game.

Corban (17-15, 8-12 CCC) will look to continue their cinderella story as they go on the road again to face No. 4 seed Oregon Tech on Tuesday for the tournament title. At stake is an automatic qualification to the NAIA D II Men’s basketball national tournament that will go to the winner.
