Lady Yotes Split Doubleheader with Carroll College
CALDWELL, Idaho –
Colette Robert tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener for the College of Idaho, Carroll College used a six-run rally with one out in the seventh inning of Game 2 to salvage a Cascade Conference doubleheader split at Symms Field.
Katelyn Geyer drove in three runs in the Lady Yotes (6-11, 4-4 CCC) 5-0 Game 1 win, with the Saints breaking through in their final at bat for a 6-1 victory in the night cap.
Robert allowed six singles in picking up her fourth win of the season – stranding runners in scoring position in the three middle innings and coaxing a game-ending double play grounder with two runners on in the seventh.
Geyer got C of I on the board in the second, rocketing a long solo homer to left field off Saints (4-5, 3-2) starter Tess Eaton. An inning later, Delany Atkins singled and moved to third on a bloop double from
Destiny Turner. Atkins beat the throw home on a
Hailey Chambers ground ball to second to make it 2-0 and after Chambers stole second, Geyer ripped a two-run single through the right side to double the lead.
The Yotes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, as
Kristin Paulazzo doubled and scored on a
Courtney Ellis bloop single into left-center.
Geyer, Paulazzo and Ellis each had two hits for the Yotes, with Brittany Smith going 3-for-3 in the loss for Carroll.
Game 2 was a pitchers' duel throughout, as the Saints Allison Williams and C of I's
Ashley Pesek matched out for out. The Yotes scratched across an unearned run in the second, as Geyer reached on an infield single, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild throw by Williams on a sacrifice bunt attempt. However, the righty averted further damage with two strikeouts and a fly ball out to keep the score 1-0.
Two outs away from victory, C of I watched the Saints bat around for six runs. A pinch-hit double, chopped over the head of third-baseman
Angelina Romero, by Megan McCormick got the tying run in scoring position, with fellow pinch-hitter Hannah Alcorn scooting a single under the diving glove of Paulazzo at second to tie the score. Smith punched a single to right field and following a strikeout, Anna ApRoberts blooped a single down the right field line to plate the go-ahead run. A C of I error plated a run, with Williams providing the big blow, blasting a three-run homer to center.
Williams scattered just three hits and fanned six to earn the win, with Smith going 2-for-3 for Carroll. Chambers, Geyer and
Rickey Kamimae had singles in the loss, with Pesek allowing just two earned runs in the complete game effort. Romero logged eight defensive assists at third base for the Yotes, the second-highest total in program history.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader – with Game 3 the rubber-game of the CCC series.
