CCC Women’s Golf Championships Presented by U.S. Bank Begin Today
LA GRANDE, Ore. – The 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Golf Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, get underway today in Springfield, Ore., with teams vying for an automatic qualification to the NAIA National Tournament. Hosted by Northwest Christian University, teams will compete over two days and 36 holes at Springfield Golf Club.
The Lady Owls from Oregon Tech are the favorites entering the two day tourney after they captured their first ever CCC regular season title two weeks ago. Over 5 tournaments (10 rounds) the squad recorded 3,185 total strokes for a stroke average of 318.15. They also boast four of the top seven golfers in the league based on stroke average heading into the championships led by No.1 Janelle Ferlan. Ferlan has a stroke average of 77.2, followed by, Stephanie Koza in the No. 4 spot (80.2), Heidi Froelich No. 5 (80.3) and Noemi Ernst No. 6 (81.1). The team is currently ranked No. 16 in the NAIA coaches’ poll.
Corban University, which finished in 2
nd place in the regular season, carded 3,285 strokes over 5 tournaments for a stroke average of 328.5. Casey Jansen has a stroke average of 79.3 which is good for the third spot going into the championships. Carrie Wallace holds down the seventh spot in stroke average at 81.4. The Warriors are receiving votes in latest coaches’ poll.
The College of Idaho’s Natalie Mullins leads a Coyote team that finished third in the regular season. Mullins is second in stroke average right behind Ferlan at 78.8 and should contend for medalist honors.
Warner Pacific College, Multnomah University and Walla Walla University did not field full teams during the regular season so were not eligible to place. WWU will have a full team at the CCC Championships and MU and WPC each will send individuals.
The Winning team will receive the CCC’s automatic qualification to the NAIA National Championships which will be held at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida May 23-26.
