No. 18 L-C State Sweeps Oregon Tech on Senior Day
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.- In the first two games of a six game series, Lewis-Clark State outscored Oregon Tech 19 -10 on senior day of Sunday’s doubleheader at Kiger Stadium. The two wins puts the Warriors 2.5 games up on the Owls in the conference standings with the Warriors moving to 12-7 in NAIA-West play and 22-10 overall, Tech slips to 10-10 in West play and 15-20 on the year.
Game 1 – LCS 7, Oregon Tech 2
Oregon Tech pitcher John Schulz gave up two runs through the first 5 innings pitched. LC State earned their first run in the 2nd inning. The Warriors were able to load the bases with just 1 out. Emilio Alcantar stepped to the plate and hit a hard ball down the third base line. The hit brought Gunnar Buhner home from 3rd base, but the advancing runner was out on a tag on the bag.
In the top of the 5th inning, the Warriors struck again, this time with a solo homerun by J. J. Robinson. The Owls responded in the in the bottom of the 5th. With the bases loaded Alexis Paz earned a base on balls, sending Alex Poltz home from 3rd base before the inning was over. The score 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
The 6th inning saw LC State score one more run, as Logan Griffin singled and advanced to 2nd on a passed ball at the plate. He would make it home on a deep single by Cooper Goldby.
In the 8th inning the Warriors brought home 3 runs on 4 hits, 3 singles and 1 double, as LC State bats through the order. The Owls unable to get any runs on the board for themselves head into the 9th inning with the score 6-1 for the away team.
The Warriors scored 1 run in the top of the 9th taking their total to 7 runs for the game. In the bottom of the inning, LC State went to their bullpen, relieving starting pitcher Connor Brogdon after two doubles by Oregon Tech’s Naz Thibodeaux and Alexis Poltz, brought in their second score of the game.
The game wrapped up with a final score of 7-2 in favor of the visiting LC State.
Connor Brogdon picks up his 4th win of the season, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs while striking out 14 batters. Logan Griffin led the Warriors with 5 hits, while Cooper Goldby had 3 RBI’s on 3 hits.
Tech finished the game with 7 hits with Alexis Paz and Alex Poltz with 2 hits each and 1 RBI each
Game 2 – LCS 12, Oregon Tech 8
After two scoreless innings, a triple by LCS DH Chase Hafer in the 3rd, put the Warriors in scoring position. A SAC fly to right field brought the runner home. Two singles and a double brought in 2 more runs, taking the score to 3-0 for the visitors.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Owls started to find their bats as they batted through the order. With the bases loaded, 1 out and 2 runs already scored, Alex Poltz stepped up to the plate and smacked a deep double to left-center field, clearing the bases and sending Tech into the lead, 5-3.
The Warriors responded in the top of the 5th, as Micah Brown hits his first home run of the season, driving home runners on 1st and 3rd, adding 3 runs for the visitors. One more run would score before the inning came to a close. The score 7-5 for LCS.
LCS continued swinging their bats well in the 6th inning, as they added 4 runs to their score. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Seaver Whalen came to the plate and connected for his fourth hit of the game, this time hitting a 3 run RBI home run. The score jumping to 11-5 for LCS.
1 run scored in the top of the 7th for the Warriors, taking their final tally to 12 runs for the game. Oregon Tech responded with some energy in the final inning, bringing in 3 runs on a Blake Wrotenbury triple, but the runs were not enough to get them back in the game. The final score 12-8 for the visitors.
Kevin Hamann picks up the win for LC State giving up 5 runs on 5 hits. Seaver Whalen led the way at the plate with 4 hits and 4 RBI’s, while Micah Brown had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s and Emilio Alcantar added 3 hits and 3 RBI’s.
For the Owls, Adam Kandra pitched 5 innings giving up 10 hits and 7 runs with 5 strikeouts. Alex Poltz led the Owls in batting with 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, while Blake Wrotenbery had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, and Alexis Paz and Evan Johnson each added 1 RBI on 1 hit.
The two teams will meet again Monday and Tuesday at 11:00 am for doubleheaders at Kiger Stadium.
