SALEM, Ore. – Corban University Director of Athletics Greg Eide announced on Thursday that Corban has hired Derek Legg as the Warriors’ new head baseball coach.
“I am pleased to announce Derek Legg as our new head coach of Corban baseball, and welcome him to the Warrior family,” said Eide. “After a nationwide search that resulted in a large pool of very qualified candidates, Derek separated himself as the search committee’s choice to lead our program forward. I am excited about Derek’s leadership, the staff he will assemble to assist him, and am confident the program is in very good hands for many years to come.”
Legg, a former NCAA Division I and Corban University baseball player, has served as an assistant coach at Corban since 2014, acting as the number one assistant coach during the past two years. While in charge of the team defense, infield and third base, he also was in charge of running the offense. On top of his time as an assistant coach at Corban, Legg led the Salem Capitols to the team’s first-ever Championship during the 2016 summer season in the Oregon Collegiate Baseball League.
“I feel so blessed and honored to be the next head coach for Warrior baseball,” said Legg. “I want to thank Athletic Director Greg Eide and Corban University for the opportunity. I also want to thank my wife and family for the support they have given in following my passion of coaching.”
Prior to coaching as an assistant at Corban, Legg was an assistant coach for the Bozeman Bucks. While with the Bucks, he was in charge of the pitchers, hitters, and infielders. During his playing career, he played at Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton before transferring to Corban in 2013 to play his final season. While with Corban, he led the Warriors in hits, RBI, runs scored, doubles, and triples. He was recognized by Corban as the Warrior Male Athlete of the Year and was a First-Team All-Conference and Gold Glove award-winner for the conference.
“My staff and I are excited to put in the hard work to bring success to Warrior baseball on the field, in the classroom, and in the community,” said Legg. “It has been an exciting year for Corban Athletics, and we look forward to joining in on that success in the near future. Corban is a special place where we can use the platform of baseball to bring honor to the Lord and spread His glory. I’m thrilled to be able to lead these young men as we pursue excellence on this journey. Go Warriors!”
Legg will begin his duties as head coach at Corban on July 5.
