No. 11 EOU Falls to HIU, Sweeps The Master’s 8/17/2017 6:11:58 PM FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 11 Eastern Oregon volleyball team went 1-1 for the second-straight day at the HIU/Vanguard Summer Slam on Thursday. The Mountaineers (2-2) fell in four sets to host Hope International in the morning match, but bounced back with a dominant sweep of The Master’s in the afternoon. Match 1: HIU 3, No. 11 EOU 1 (22-25, 24-26, 25-18, 23-25) EOU nearly hit even with HIU in the first match of the day, finishing with a .204 attack percentage to the Royals’ .206. The Mounties were also stronger on the block with a 13-7 advantage over HIU along with an 8-3 lead in service aces. Freshman Madison Pilon recorded her first career double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. She was also effective from the service line with three aces. Senior Amanda Miller led the offensive attack with 11 kills and a .292 hitting percentage. Sophomore Hailee Ackerman finished with 10 kills, followed by senior Madisen Garlie and sophomore Megan Bunn with nine apiece. Garlie and Bunn guided a tough front, recording eight and seven blocks assists, respectively. Bunn also added one solo block. Senior Malia Mills paced the Mounties with 14 digs. Freshman Aspen Christiansen recorded 12 digs. Fellow freshman Kiley McMurtrey added seven digs and four service aces. Match 2: No. 11 EOU 3, The Master’s 0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) In the afternoon match, the Mountaineers came out on fire and never cooled off. They hit .500 from the floor in the opening set to cruise to a 25-12 victory over The Master’s. EOU finished with a .439 hitting percentage for the match, doubling the Mustangs’ .213 percentage. Three Mountaineer hitters posted double-digit kills, paced by Bunn with 12. Ackerman reset a career high with 11 kills, which included no errors and an incredible .688 hitting percentage. Miller finished with 10 kills, her third straight double-digit performance. Pilon had an impressive game from the setter position, reaching 30 assists for the first time in her career. Junior Sarah Carpenter added 13 assists with five digs. Defensively, EOU only needed three blocks as the hitters came through with a dominant performance. McMurtrey paced the team with 10 digs from the back line.
