Evergreen Wears Down, Loses Twice on Saturday

BUTTE, Mont. – Playing their sixth and seventh matches in four days, The Evergreen State College wore down on Saturday in losing twice at the Big Sky Challenge volleyball tournament hosted by Montana Tech.

Evergreen dropped a 25-18, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19 decision to Lewis-Clark State before falling to Providence, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18.

The Geoducks finished their four-day, seven-match Montana road trip with a 3-4 record.

LEWIS-CLARK STATE 3, EVERGREEN 1
Evergreen never got its offense untracked in suffering its first loss in the tournament. The Geoducks hit just .116 with a single-set best of .154 in the second-set win. Chloee Hunt continued her outstanding play with 10 kills, a .368 attack percentage and five block assists, while Bethanie Nelson had six kills and a .417 kill success rate. Lehualani Keka finished the match with one solo block and four block assists.

The Warriors hit .233 as a team and got 14 kills from Natalie Batiste.

PROVIDENCE 3, EVERGREEN 0
The Argos served up 13 aces and compiled nine team blocks in taking the straight-set victory. Providence (formerly University of Great Falls) got 10 kills from Sydney Anderson, while Ava Larkin and Dani Norling equally split 30 assists.

The Geoducks hit .135 as a team, including a healthy .364 in the final set, but couldn't overcome the Argos. Natalie Taylor collected 10 kills and was effective at the net with five block assists, Nelson had seven kills and a .357 attack percentage, and both Ashtyn Bagby and Matalasi Laban had a dozen assists. Megan Breckenridge led the back row with 10 digs.

Evergreen opens its home schedule, as well as the Cascade Collegiate Conference slate, at 7 p.m. Wednesday when the Walla Walla University Wolves visit Costantino Recreation Center.
