EOU Women's Soccer Upsets No. 3 Vanguard in Season Opener 8/28/2017 4:45:07 PM COSTA MESA, Calif. – Thanks to Morgan Farrington’s first career goal in the 67th minute, the EOU women’s soccer team upset No. 3-ranked Vanguard 1-0 on Monday afternoon. In his first match as head coach at EOU, Jacob Plocher earned win number one in a big way, defeating the highest ranked opponent in program history. “The ladies played extremely hard,” said Plocher. “We bent, but did not break. We were able to take advantage of an opportunity and, in the end, got the result we wanted.” The two teams played even through the first 45 minutes, with Vanguard holding a 7-2 advantage in shots. In the second half, the Mountaineers took momentum with multiple good looks to score the first goal, taking seven shots within the first 20 minutes. EOU finally broke through in the 67th minute as Farrington netted the goal off the bench in her first collegiate match. Vanguard pushed its offense from that point forward, taking 16 shots in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell was tested on multiple occasions late, but stood tall, making six saves on her way to her first career shutout. Despite giving up 23 shots, the defense was strong in front of Cottrell, allowing just six on net. Vanguard held a slight advantage, 6-4, in corner kicks while taking 10 fouls to EOU’s six. Seniors Yasmin Mookerdum and Mariana Madrigal each had two shots to lead the team, with Mookerdum putting two on net. The Mountaineers have a quick turnaround after the impressive victory, visiting Hope International on Tuesday at 12 p.m. in Fullerton, Calif.
