Mountaineers Fall 1-0 at Hope International 8/29/2017 4:49:48 PM FULLERTON, Calif. – A day after upsetting No. 3 Vanguard, the Eastern Oregon women’s soccer team fell by the same score, 1-0 at Hope International on Tuesday. The Mountaineers (1-1) continued their California road trip, playing another tight contest against Hope International. “While we didn’t get the result we wanted, there are still a lot of positives to take away from today,” said head coach Jacob Plocher. “We played a much better second half and had some great opportunities. Unfortunately, we were just not able to capitalize on them.” The Royals (2-0-1) opened the scoring in the 31st minute, on a chip shot over goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell. HIU took the 1-0 lead into halftime, also leading 5-1 in shots. In the second half, the Mountaineers took control of the match looking for the tying goal. EOU outshot the Royals 8-3 in the final 45 minutes, which included a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. A foul on Hope International in the 74th minute set up a great scoring chance for EOU just outside of the box. Senior Alexandria Cuaresma took the shot from close range, but Royals’ goalkeeper Jacqueline Talley made the save. Cuaresma and freshman Morgan Farrington, who scored Monday’s golden goal, led the team with two shots apiece. Cottrell made three saves in net for the Mounties. Eastern Oregon next returns to the northwest, facing Puget Sound on Sept. 8 in Tacoma, Wash. For more information on Eastern Oregon women’s soccer, follow @EOUAthletics or visit eousports.com.
