Corban Holds Off Evergreen Challenge
The Evergreen State College gave No. 5-ranked Corban all it could handle on a hot Friday afternoon before falling, 3-1, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer match played at Geoduck Pitch.
The match was the conference opener for both teams.
The Geoducks (1-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 CCC) played resilient defense through the first 26 minutes before the Warriors broke through at 26:30 on Langdon Roscoe's first goal of the season. Timur Zhividze crossed the ball into the box from the left wing and Roscoe headed it home for a 1-0 Corban lead.
Zhividze was in on the second Warriors goal just 90 seconds later, sending the ball in from the right side to Alex Segovia, whose shot caromed off an Evergreen defender and past goalkeeper Ben Stevenson and into the back of the net. The goal was the fourth of the season for Segovia.
Corban held an 8-1 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes, but the Geoducks came out strong at the start of the second half and cut their deficit in half. Tino Pantaleon got the ball on the left wing and whipped in a cross to Angel Trejo-Delgado, whose first-time, left-footed volley from the top of the box beat Corban keeper Jordan Farr. Trejo-Delgado's first goal of the season came at the 49:05 mark.
The Warriors would seal the win at 66:33 on a goal by Rolando Velazquez, his team-leading fifth of the season. Segovia had the ball at the top of the Evergreen box and passed to Velazquez on the right side, and he blasted home from eight yards out.
Corban finished with 16 shots - two of which hit the woodwork - and six corner kicks compared to six shots and five corners for the Geoducks.
Stevenson ended the match with three saves and Farr had two.
Both teams are in action on Saturday, the Geoducks hosting Northwest Christian and Corban playing at Northwest University.
