CALDWELL, Idaho – One big weekend was all it took to soothe three weeks of frustration for the Southern Oregon men's soccer team.
After reviving their season Friday with an upset of ninth-ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.), the Raiders completed a perfect Cascade Conference-opening road trip Sunday afternoon by defeating The College of Idaho, 2-1, at Simplot Stadium.
SOU (2-5 overall, 2-0 CCC) struck first with a
Paul Matyas goal in the 31st minute that was assisted by
Kelly Gieber and
Gonzalo Garcia, but the lead didn't last long: 11 seconds later, Daniel Carmago assisted an Ahmet Muremovic equalizer for the Yotes (4-2, 1-1).
With his first goal for the Raiders, sophomore transfer
Esteban Castaneda had the final say in converting a free kick in the 61st minute. It occurred in the middle of a testy second half, during which the Yotes were issued five yellow cards, the Raiders three, and 19 fouls were called.
SOU's defense held tight, holding the Yotes without a shot on goal in the second half. Raider keeper Wyatt Zabinksi corralled his only two saves in the first.
The Raiders maintained a 12-10 edge in shots, placing seven on goal. They've only been out-shot twice this year, even in the midst of their season-opening five-game losing streak.
Dating back to the 2015 season, they've now won nine consecutive CCC road games.
They'll play at Raider Stadium for the first time this season next week – at 2 p.m. Friday against Multnomah, and at 11 a.m. Sunday against Walla Walla (Wash.).
