LA GRANDE, Ore. – Goals were at a premium Saturday afternoon as the EOU women’s soccer team edged Evergreen 1-0, thanks to a goal courtesy of senior midfielder Yasmin Mookerdum in the 61st minute at the EOU Soccer Field.
“We played a much better second half,” said head coach Jacob Plocher. “We need to continue to work on finishing our chances and play up to our potential. For the most part, we achieved our goal of going 2-0 on the weekend, and we’re looking forward to a good week of practice as we prepare for Carroll College next week.”
Sophomore keeper Cydni Cottrell was put on her toes early inside the first ten minutes of the match, coming up with two saves before the EOU (3-2-1, 2-0 CCC) offense ignited. At the 16th minute mark, a shot from Mookerdum was denied by ESC (0-6-2, 0-3-1 CCC) goalie Emily Sorenson, three minutes later, junior midfielder Taylor Boyer tested Sorenson but came up short.
In the following sequence, junior forward Abri Cardenas looked to have the first score of the half, but the junior was called for offside on the far left post. The Mounties launched seven more shots to close the period but nothing immersed as both teams headed scoreless into the half.
EOU held the Geoducks to three shots in the first, while the Blue and Gold recorded 12 shots, six on frame.
ESC pressured the Mountaineers backline to commence the second period, nearly scoring twice in the 47th minute. After gaining composure, EOU controlled most of the possession and it finally paid off in the 61st minute. Inside the six-yard box, Mookerdum, gathered a loose ball and fired a shot which was blocked at first but her second effort found the back of the net.
The closing 10 minutes of regulation saw four EOU shots get blocked by ESC defenders, including one denial at goal, en route to the team’s second conference victory.
Cottrell collected her third win in net for 2017, recording five saves.
