SALEM, Ore. – While scoring a goal in each half and shutting down Southern Oregon University's attack, the No. 5-ranked Corban University men's soccer team earned a pivotal 2-0 triumph over the Raiders on Saturday afternoon at the CFC Soccer Complex. With the win, it leaves the Warriors as the only remaining undefeated team in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action during the 2017 season.
"I felt like our group played a very composed and intelligent match today," said Corban head coach Aaron Lewis. "They recognized both the threats and opportunities presented today and handled both really well."
Jesse Martin opened the scoring in the 24th minute of play, as after turning and beating two defenders at the top of the 18-yard box, he slipped past two more and blasted it into the back of the net to give the Warriors the lead.
In the second stanza, SOU began to press Corban more, but the Warriors did a good job of absorbing the pressure, and eventually in the 78th minute of play, Julio Miranda broke up an SOU attack and began the counter-attack. After feeding a pass to Alex Segovia who played a through ball to Nathaniel Cheney, Cheney whipped in a cross to Miranda who took a touch and buried his shot into the lower-left corner to double Corban's advantage.
Corban finished the match with an 11-6 shots' advantage, and in goal, Jordan Farr made four key saves en route to earning his second shutout of the weekend.
Timur Zhividze led the way offensively for the Warriors with three shots, while for SOU (5-6-0, 5-1-0 CCC), six different players recorded shots in the defeat.
Corban (10-0-1, 6-0-0 CCC) returns to the pitch next Saturday on the road when it heads south to take on Northwest Christian University. Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Springfield.
