Early Goals Carry Northwest Past Evergreen
Visiting Northwest University scored two goals within 20 seconds of each other early in the first half and went on to beat The Evergreen State College, 3-0, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played Saturday afternoon at Geoduck Pitch.
Hannah Nicholson scored on a header from a corner kick at 5:11 and just 20 seconds later ran onto a pass from Jubilee Zevenbergen and slotted the ball into the goal to give the Eagles (5-6-0 overall, 2-3-0 CCC) a dream start.
Evergreen (0-7-2, 0-4-1) stiffened on defense for most of the game, giving up just one more goal to Brianna Sillivan at 85:30, but it never got the offense going. The Geoducks finished with three shots, none on goal, and Kat Sanchez earned the shutout in goal for the Eagles, who last year advanced all the way to the national tournament semifinal game.
Emily Sorensen finished the match with four saves for the Geoducks, who faced a total of 20 shots from Northwest.
Evergreen has two weeks off until returning to conference action on Saturday, Oct. 13, when Oregon Tech visits Geoduck Pitch. The time will be much needed for the Geoducks, who have a short roster due to a rash of recent injuries.
