LA GRANDE, Ore. – After a defensive first half, the Eastern Oregon women’s soccer team broke out for two goals in the second half to defeat Carroll College 2-0 in Cascade College Conference play, Friday afternoon at the EOU Soccer Field.

The Mountaineers (4-2-1, 3-0 CCC) handed the reigning co-conference champion Carroll (5-3-1, 1-1-1 CCC) its first loss in a CCC regular season match since 2015.

“I am very proud of our ladies, they played a true team game,” said head coach Jacob Plocher. “We were able to finish our chances today. That was a big win for our ladies, they have put in great effort over the past two weeks of practice.”

The two teams played the first half very defensively, with the Saints leading 5-1 in shots through 45 minutes. The Mountaineers picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, finally breaking through in the 60th minute on junior midfielder Natalie Mitchell’s third goal of the season. Mitchell took a cross from senior defender Rosalie Salisbury and one-timed it past Carroll goalkeeper Devan Murfitt.

Less than 13 minutes later, sophomore forward Nan Kiebert headed in her second goal of the season off a cross by junior midfielder Taylor Boyer. Senior forward Mariana Madrigal also drew an assist on the setup.

The Mountaineers ended up winning the shot total as well, finishing ahead 8-7 over the Saints. Boyer led the way with four shots. On the other side, Brynn Walker took two shots with one on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell made two saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

With the win, EOU remains the only undefeated team in conference play and in second place with nine points, just one point behind Corban (3-1-1).

The Blue and Gold are back in action Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Providence (3-4, 2-1 CCC) at the EOU Soccer Field.
