No. 17 EOU Men’s Wrestling Falls to No. 5 North Idaho
MISSOULA, Mont. – The No. 17 Eastern Oregon men’s wrestling team fell on the road to North Idaho College 30-9 on Saturday afternoon.
North Idaho College is the No. 5-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association, a league known for producing tough wrestling programs.
After both teams took a double forfeit in the 125-lb weight class, junior Mhar Caballa, the No. 14 ranked-wrestler at 125 pounds, wrestled up a weight class at 133 pounds. Caballa came away with the victory in a grueling match, defeating Austin Iorga by a 12-9 decision.
The Cardinals won the next three matches with two by three-point decisions to take an 11-3 lead in the dual. Junior Drake Randall helped cut into the deficit, however, pinning Cooper McCullough at 165 pounds. Randall picked up the pin 17 seconds into the third period.
From that point on, EOU was held scoreless as the Cardinals earned two pins in the final four matches. Jacob Dupuis battled closely at 174 pounds, falling by just a 4-3 decision to NIC’s Trager Abatti.
The Blue and Gold are on the road once again next weekend, visiting Cascade Collegiate Conference foe Warner Pacific on Jan. 20 in Portland, Oregon. They will also face Embry-Riddle on Saturday before taking part in the Clackamas CC Open on Sunday.
