LA GRANDE, Ore. –The Northwest Christian University men’s basketball team has been named the “Team of the Week” for January 8-14, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced.

The defending CCC regular season champions have had a rough start to the 2017-18 campaign, but the weekend wins over two top twenty-five teams may be an indication that NCU cannot be overlooked as conference action heats up.

On Friday against No. 23 Southern Oregon, the Beacons handed the Raiders a 97-91 loss. Michael Loomis had 29 points and 16 rebounds to lead a team that shot .425 from the field and made 27 of 31 free-throw attempts. Spencer Mattox added 18 points and collected six rebounds in the win.

It took extra basketball on Saturday night to determine the winner in a slugfest with No. 20 Oregon Tech. It was Loomis again leading the way for NCU as he scored career-highs with 36 points and 22 rebounds in the 123-121 OT victory. Loomis became the first Beacon in program history to register a 30/20 performance

NCU (8-8, 4-5 CCC) will attempt to slay another giant as No. 8 College of Idaho will invade the Morse Event Center on January 18. The following night Eastern Oregon, who knocked off No. 16 WPC and is receiving votes in the latest poll, will visit the Beacons.
