SOUTHERN OREGON 86, MULTNOMAH 43: 9th-Ranked Raiders Double Up on Lions
PORTLAND, Ore. – After hanging around with 9
th-ranked Southern Oregon University for a quarter, the Multnomah University Lions suffered through a dismal offensive second period and the visiting Raiders pulled away for a comfortable 86-43 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory Friday evening here at Lytle Gym.
A steal and layup by Toria Bradford gave the Raiders an early lead, but the visitors missed their next three shots before a three-pointer by
Tiara Chinn gave the Lions their only lead of the game 3-2 at the 7:39 mark. After SOU went back up 6-3,
Faith Kraatz nailed a jumper and a free throw to tie it 6-6 midway through the period. Bradford broke the tie with a layup at 5:11 that started a 7-0 run and the Raiders never trailed again, though the Lions twice got within four, at 17-13 and 20-16 on a pair of threes by
Valerie Wakefield.
SOU led 24-16 at the end of the opening quarter, but Multnomah's offense disappeared in the second period as the Lions connected on only two of 12 shots. The Raiders out-scored the hosts 21-5 in the period, taking a 45-21 advantage into halftime, and continued to stretch the lead in the final two quarters. The margin was 35 at 69-34 at the end of the third, and reached 45 at 86-41 with 1:08 left before a layup by
Erin Estabrook with 22 seconds left ended the Lions' scoring.
--- By the Numbers: Rachelle Tau was the only Lion in double figures with 10 points, but Wakefield, Chinn, and Kraatz just missed with nine apiece.
Paris Sanders grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, Tau handed out four assists, and Kraatz had three steals and two blocked shots. The Lions finished with a .288 shooting percentage (15-52), but were 7-of-17 (.412) from beyond the arc.
Sophia Altemus led the Raiders with 19 points, followed by Bradford with 13 and Ariel Augustine and Daranda Hinkey with 10 each. SOU shot .402 (33-82) from the field. Nitteayah Barfield had nine rebounds, Hinkey passed out five assists, and Kenadee Honaker picked up five steals as the Raiders made 21 swipes in all and forced 31 Multnomah turnovers while making only 11 of their own. The Raiders also controlled the glass 52-39, including 22 offensive boards.
Multnomah fell to 1-22 on the season and 1-12 in the conference, while Southern Oregon improved 19-1 and 11-1 in the CCC with its 12
th straight win.
