Maddy Barbarino Selected to Initiate Women’s Soccer Program at Multnomah
PORTLAND, Ore. – Madeline (Maddy) Barbarino has been selected from a nation-wide pool of candidates to initiate the women's soccer program at Multnomah University, which will begin play in the fall of 2018, according to Multnomah director of athletics
Lois Vos.
Barbarino will join the Multnomah athletics department in early January after two seasons as an assistant women's soccer coach at Nyack College in Nyack, N.Y., where she helped lead the Warriors to a 2016 CACC playoff berth. She was primarily in charge of developing the team to reflect program's mission involving a spiritual focus consistent with the college's goals which promoted individual athletes' spiritual growth as well as to target recruitment of student-athletes who are institutionally compatible in lifestyle standards, academic expectations, and commitment to graduation.
Prior to her collegiate coaching years, Barbarino gained coaching experience as the girl's head soccer coach at Nyack High School for a year. She also served as a youth girl's coach in local soccer clubs Ramapo Valley Soccer Club and Rockland FC. During her summers of 2013-2014, she served on an international sports ministry mission trip to Brazil as a member of the Chicago Eagles Summer Academy.
Originally from State Island, N.Y., Barbarino is a 2015 graduate of Nyack with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a 2019 graduate with a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling. During her undergraduate days, she served for four seasons as team captain at Nyack, a NCAA Division II program. She served her campus community as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Athletes in Action Small Group Leader. In her spare time, she enjoys physical fitness workouts, running, reading and learning.
Barbarino first learned of the Multnomah opening from a coaching colleague at William Jessup College. She is excited about the chance to establish a brand-new program, saying, "This is an opportunity to step in and create the kind of culture you want to see from the very beginning. As a Christian college, we want to recruit people of high caliber and high character and develop an atmosphere of excellence. I want our primary focus to be on high standards, not necessarily wins, though that should come as well, but we want each person in the program to be striving for further achievement in their personal and playing lives."
"It is always a challenge to build a new sports program, and we think Maddy is the right person at the right time for us," said Vos. "Her experience in both playing and coaching, her relational skills, her enthusiasm, and her personal character are the qualities we were looking for to start women's soccer here."
Multnomah is affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and is a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The addition of women's soccer brings the university's number of sports to 13, joining men's soccer, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball, golf, cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field.
