Southern Oregon Men’s Wrestling Named Team of the Week
LA GRANDE, Ore. –The Southern Oregon University men’s wrestling team has been named the “Team of the Week” for January 1-7, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced.
The No. 13 ranked Raiders kicked off 2018 in rousing fashion toppling CCC foes No. 6 University of Providence and No. 10 Montana State-Northern in duals before winning the team title at the Menlo invite.
Against the Argo’s, both teams won four matches and forfeited a class, but junior 141-pounder Devin Poppen's bonus points proved to be the difference in helping SOU to the 20-18 upset victory. In the matchup with the MSUN Lights the Raiders earned the 26-15 win by knocking off four top-15 individuals.
Making their way from Montana to Atherton, California for the Menlo Invite, the Raiders return to campus with a team victory to add to their hot start in the new year. Scoring 128.5 points SOU edged San Francisco State (126.5) by two points. No. 8 Menlo was third with 120 points.
Southern (10-5, 5-1 CCC) will return to dual action when they travel to Warner Pacific on January 11 and will be at the Hastings Duals in Hastings, Neb. On January 13.
