Corban Men’s Basketball Explodes for 105-69 Victory in Season-Opener

SALEM, Ore. – With seven players scoring in double-figures, the Corban University men's basketball team exploded for 105 points in its official 2018-19 season-opener, downing the Camosun College Chargers on Saturday night, 105-69.

"Our guys played with great energy from start to finish and fed off that amazing crowd," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "We shared the ball and found the open guy for rhythm plays! We will be able to break down film this week and find ways in which we can continue to improve."

In front of a Homecoming crowd of more than 900, the Warriors began the game on fire, nailing 10 first-half three-pointers en route to taking a 63-35 lead into the break. Corban went 10-for-16 from deep in the first 20 minutes and shot 55.6% overall in the first stanza.

In the second half, Joel Johnson led the way and was dominant down low, throwing down a thunderous dunk en route to lifting the Warriors to the 36-point triumph. Johnson finished with 11 points on an efficient 4-for-6 shooting effort, while Jaxon Hughes led the way offensively with 17 points on a 6-for-8 shooting mark for the Navy and Gold.

Denis Kirichenko also had an outstanding evening, racking up 15 points on a 5-for-8 effort from the floor and a 3-for-3 clip from distance. Beau Roggenbach was big time for Corban down low, grabbing a team-leading 12 rebounds to go with 10 points, while Chandler Cavell scored 11 points and totaled four boards. Additionally, AJ Hodges and Tyler Wadleigh both finished in double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For the game, Corban shot 52.8% from the floor and 48.1% from downtown while holding Camosun to a 44.8% shooting mark overall and 26.3% from deep. On the boards, the Warriors also held the advantage with 41 rebounds to just 32 for the Chargers.

For Camosun, Shaquille Maharaj led the way with 14 points, while Dallas Hancox finished in double-digits with 10 points.

Corban (1-0) returns to the court next Friday and Saturday when it hosts the PT Northwest Classic. Tipoff on Friday is slated for 7 p.m. vs. New Hope Christian College.
