EOU Men's Soccer Blows Out Wolves 10-1 To Wrap Up Regular Season
LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team defeated Walla Walla 10-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Sunday afternoon, led by goals from six different players.
The Mountaineers (10-3-4, 8-2-3 CCC) end their regular season schedule with their most lopsided win of the year, with six different players finding the back of the net. The win marks a five-game win streak for the Mountaineers, their longest of the season.
The Wolves (0-17, 0-12 CCC) finish their season without a win, and were outscored 29-0 in their last three games.
EOU started quickly, scoring the first goal of the game just 36 seconds, courtesy of junior Oscar Munoz, for the fastest goal scored to open a game in program history . The Mountaineers kept their foot on the gas pedal, finishing the first half with a 6-0 lead. Freshman Cristian Miramontes and senior Anthony Leavens each scored twice in the half, and junior Micah Hill scored his first goal of the season to put the Mounties ahead comfortably after 45 minutes. Munoz added another goal to his total in the second half.
Other scorers for EOU were Jacob Thielke and Alex Gutierrez. Gutierrez scored two goals that spanned ten seconds apart, at 49:21 and 49:31. Scoring two goals within ten seconds apart was the fastest consecutive goals in program history.
The Mountaineers controlled the pace of the game from start to finish, firing off 31 strikes on their way to their highest goal total since 2016 Carlos Cantu scored on a free-kick to break up EOU's shutout in the 80th minute. Goalkeeper Antonio Gracia made one save in net to earn the victory.
Walla Walla struggled to keep possession and gain any momentum offensively, tallying nine shots in the entire game, three of which were on target.
The men's team finished in fourth place in the CCC standings, earning their first trip to the conference tournament in November. The No. 4-seeded Mounties will battle No. 5 Providence in the opening round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. The full tournament will take place at the Willamalane Sports Complex in Springfield, Oregon.
