Corban scored three times on Saturday while earning the shutout.
SALEM, Ore. – While scoring three fantastic goals, the No. 16-ranked Corban University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 triumph over Warner Pacific University on Saturday, capping off the 2018 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular season with a bang. The victory puts the Warriors in first place at the moment by two points, and Corban will now await Sunday's Southern Oregon University result at Carroll College (Mont.) to find out the final regular season standings.
"It was nice to see our group sharp from the beginning today," said Corban head coach Aaron Lewis, "and I think that put Warner on their heels. If we can continue that momentum into next week, I like our chances in the upcoming tournament."
The Warriors got things going in the first half when Wade Coetzee rose above the Knights' defense and headed home a corner-kick from Camilo Avendano in the 11th minute of play, giving the Warriors the 1-0 lead.
Alan Cruz Ramirez then made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, curling a beautiful free kick over the wall and into the top-right corner of the goal, scoring his second goal in as many days.
Warner Pacific had an opportunity late in the first half when the visitors were awarded a penalty kick, but the attempt went wide left and the game went into halftime at 2-0 with Corban in front.
Five minutes into the second stanza, Alex Segovia blasted a shot that was saved initially, but he followed up his own shot and ripped the second attempt past the goalkeeper, making it 3-0 to apply the dagger.
From that point on, the Warriors' possession-style offense closed out the match for their 14th win of the campaign. Corban finished with the 16-13 shots advantage, including nine shots on goal.
The loss eliminated Warner Pacific (7-10-1, 5-7-1 CCC) from CCC Tournament contention, as the Knights would have needed to win in order to give themselves a shot at qualifying.
Corban (14-2-1, 11-1-1 CCC) will find out what seed it will be after Sunday's results from around the conference, and at that point, will know its opponent in the CCC Tournament Quarterfinal. Stay tuned at CorbanWarriors.com for all of the latest updates.
