PK Lifts Lady Yotes to 2-1 Victory over Providence
CALDWELL, Idaho – Emily Carrell calmly drove home a 56th-minute penalty kick to break a tie, as the College of Idaho rallied to win their home opener, stopping the University of Providence, 2-1, at Simplot Stadium.
The win for the Lady Yotes (5-3-1, 2-3 CCC) was their first come-from-behind Cascade Conference victory since a 2-1 win at Oregon Tech in the 2014 season.
Both teams scored early goals – as Bri Wikert chipped a ball off the end line to the waiting Malena Lennon, who slotted home a sixth-minute goal for the Argos (6-4, 4-2). The lead did not last – as three minutes later, Madison Glascock made a nice run down the right side, playing a ball near the end line from right to left over the UP defense – to the waiting Erika Thompson, who tallied her third goal of the year.
The pace picked up after halftime, with the Yotes getting a pair of quality chances from Emily Aspden in the first 10 minutes of the period – one a header that missed just left, another a low drive stopped by a sliding Dakota Neaumann.
However, at the end of the 56th minute, C of I's Megan Aumeier was tripped up in the area – giving the Yotes their first attempt from the spot this season. Carrell drove home the go-ahead goal into the left corner of the net – well ahead of the diving Neaumann.
UP nearly tied the score in the 71st minute, as a 25-yard drive from Sydney Knieriem clanged off the cross bar and a rebound attempt from Eme McLaughlin missed high.
Shea Waters made two saves in the victory for C of I, with the Lady Yotes holding a 17-11 edge in total shots. The two teams combined for 28 fouls on the day.
C of I returns to action on Sunday, hosting Carroll College at 2:30 p.m.
