Randall Wins Spokane Open, Defeats No. 1 Ranked Opponent

SPOKANE, Wash. – Senior Drake Randall went 5-0 at the competitive Spokane Open, finishing first in the 165-pound weight class while defeating the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the NAIA on Sunday.
 
Randall, ranked No. 8 at 165 pounds in the NAIA Coaches’ Preseason Poll, won his first two matches by pins to reach the quarterfinals. Then, in perhaps the match of the day, Randall out battled Montana State-Northern’s Andrew Bartel in overtime, winning by a 3-1 sudden victory-2 in a dramatic finish.
 
The senior then advanced to the semifinals, defeating back-to-back Clackamas Community College wrestlers to win the tournament title. Randall defeated Mason McDaniel by a 9-1 major decision in the semifinals, followed by a 12-2 major decision over Israel Casarez.
 
Randall’s finish helped EOU place sixth at the tournament with 82 points out of 24 teams. University of Providence won with 139.5 points.
 
Back in action, junior Blake McNall finished third in the 133-pound weight class, finishing 4-1 at the tournament. The No. 9-ranked wrestler in his weight class, McNall began his day with two victories, a pin and an 11-8 decision. After dropping a close 4-2 decision in the semifinals, McNall won his final two to finish third. In the consolation semifinals, the junior defeated No. 15 Landon Bailey of MSUN by a 2-0 decision.
 
Freshman Keegan Mulhill also had a strong tournament, placing fifth at 157 pounds. Mulhill won his first match by a 3-1 decision over a Southern Oregon wrestler. He then faced No. 3 Casey Dobson of Providence, falling in a close 6-3 decision. Mulhill won his next two matches by fall and decision, dropped his consolation semifinal match, then won by forfeit in the fifth place match.
 
Senior Mhar Caballa, ranked No. 12, went 4-2 in the 125-pound weight class. His only losses came against Brandon Kaylor, who won by an 11-10 decision and a 12-10 sudden victory in overtime.
 
Sophomore Marco Retano and freshman Jared Brant each earned four wins as well, finally falling in their round five consolation matches. Freshman Justin Wilson won three matches in the heavyweight division, while junior Jacob Dupuis also earned three victories at 165 pounds.
 
The Mountaineers will next be at the Providence Duals in Great Falls, Montana on Nov. 30. They will wrestle three duals against Simpson, Western Wyoming CC and North Western Tech.
