LA GRANDE, Ore. – After a tough non-conference start to the season, the Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team showed a piece of its vast potential with a 83-77 upset of No. 13 Southern Oregon on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (5-6, 1-0 CCC) handed the top-ranked Raiders just their second loss of the season, limiting them to under 30 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Sophomore guard Jordan May played an integral part in EOU’s victory, finishing with 34 points with seven made three-pointers. May played all 20 minutes of the second half, draining 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting in an explosive night for the sophomore.

Junior forward Landon Jones provided key secondary scoring, posting 22 points on an efficient 7-for-8 shooting. Jones also drew SOU fouls all night, converting 6-of-8 free throw attempts. The junior additionally pulled down eight rebounds with three steals.

One of EOU’s biggest struggles early on has been foul trouble and allowing the opposing team to the free throw line often. On Friday, however, the Mounties committed just 15 personal fouls and put Southern to the line just 10 times.

The Mountaineers made key shots when they needed, especially from behind the arc. The team was 12-for-22 (54.5%) in the game from long range, while making 43.3 percent from the field.

After a close start to the second half, the Mountaineers obtained the lead 55-523 with 12:21 to play and never looked back. The team led by as many as nine points at 67-58 on a three-pointer by sophomore Kobi Gardea with 8:01 to go. May’s dagger three pointer with 52 seconds left put the team ahead by 10 at 78-68.

Junior Joel Anderson nearly had a double-double with 10 assists and eight points, adding five boards. Gardea posted seven points with five assists while knocking down both three-pointer attempts. Junior Jarek Schetzle led the team with 11 rebounds.

For the Raiders, Tristen Homes finished with 24 points and six rebounds. Tate Hoffman had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Hunt added 17 points and six boards as the three combined for 60 of the team’s 77 points.

The Mountaineers remain at home on Saturday, hosting Oregon Tech at 7:30 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum in another tough CCC matchup.
