Corban Makes Plays Late to Beat Geoducks
Corban made the plays down the stretch to hold off an upset bid by the host Evergreen Geoducks, winning the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball contest between the teams by a 67-57 score on Sunday night inside Costantino Recreation Center.
Emily Yost led three Corban players in double figures with 15 points (9-6 overall, 3-2 CCC), while Merrily Jones and Angela Sikora both scored 12 points for the Geoducks (0-11, 0-7).
The Warriors held the lead for more than 37 minutes compared to just 45 seconds for Evergreen, but the Geoducks stayed close throughout and eventually cut their deficit to 56-54 with 7:42 left on a three-pointer by Merrily Jones. Corban responded with a 11-2 scoring run, capped by a Yost basket with 45 seconds remaining, to open up an insurmountable 67-56 lead. The Geoducks missed five three-pointers, a layup and four free throws during Corban's game-deciding surge.
In addition to Sikora and Jones leading the way, the Geoducks got 10 points from Deidra Miller and 10 rebounds, none points and five assists from Alexcis Higginbotham.
Evergreen shot 37.1 percent overall but made just five of its 24 attempts from three-point range.
Joining Yost in double figures for the Warriors were Treasure Farmer and Jordan Woodvine with 14 points apiece. Farmer had an outstanding game with six rebounds and seven assists with just one turnover while playing 34 minutes as the point guard. Woodvine had five assists for the Warriors, who picked up 19 on their 27 baskets.
Corban shot 41.5 percent overall, was 6-for-13 from beyond the three-point line and took the rebound battle, 47-35. Yost led her team with eight rebounds and Bri Turner added seven, including five on the offensive end.
The Geoducks hit the road next weekend for games against Eastern Oregon on Friday and College of Idaho on Saturday.
