Yotes Use Big First Quarter to Defeat Wolves, Sweep Weekend Series
College Place, Wash. - The second game of the Wolves' weekend doubleheader vs. The College of Idaho wrapped up today on
Windemuth Court. The Wolves (2-13, 1-5 CCC) headed into the game looking for a strong rebound performance after the
Yotes (6-7, 4-3 CCC) took control of game one only one night prior.
In the early stages of the first half, College of Idaho's Madison Holly picked up right where she left off, connecting on three of her first five shots for a quick eight points. Junior guard Mackenzie Royce was not far behind Holly in providing offensive production for the
Yotes, as she went 2-4 from the field in the first quarter, tallying five points. The Wolves' struggled to find a rhythm in the first quarter, shooting 3-10 from the field, as opposed to the
Yotes, who went a healthy 7-14, including 3-7 from behind the arc. The first quarter came to a close with the College of Idaho holding an 18-6 advantage.
The offensive clinic continued for the
Yotes in the early minutes of the second quarter, catapulting them to a 13-0 run and a commanding 31-9 lead halfway through the quarter. It was senior guard Alyssa Case who made her presence known in the quarter, scoring eight points in about half as many minutes while going 2-4 from three-point land.
The Wolves, would not go away, however, and were able to find a bit of a rhythm on offense through the early minutes of the third thanks to the creative abilities of Carolina Montes. It was the
Yotes, however, who maintained a consistent 14-point lead. The momentum swung all too quickly in favor of the
Yotes, however, as they converted turnovers by the Wolves into quick scoring opportunities in transition. The College of Idaho stretched their lead above 20 again, before finishing the third quarter with a 48-30 cushion.
The Wolves kept pace with the
Yotes throughout the fourth quarter, not allowing their 18-point deficit to grow any further. With the Wolves trailing 52-34 at the 5:30 mark in the fourth quarter, the two teams would play even for the remainder of the contest. The
Yotes would snatch their second consecutive win by a score of 63-45.
The
Yotes were led by Alyssa Case and her 15 points and 8 rebounds, while
Itzel Rubio notched a career high 20 points.
The Wolves now look ahead to a matchup with 14
th ranked Southern Oregon University on January 4, at 6:30p.m. in Ashland, Ore.
