Halftime Lead Slips Away As Geoducks Fall
TACOMA - Evergreen led by one point at the half but couldn't hold on in falling to the host Puget Sound Loggers, 67-56, in a non-conference women's basketball game played Wednesday night inside Memorial Fieldhouse.
Puget Sound (4-2) scored the first five points of the game and later led 17-6 before the Geoducks (0-6) ran off nine unanswered points, highlighted by three-pointers by Merrily Jones and Angela Sikora, to close the quarter trailing 17-15.
Evergreen tied the game at 27-27 on a Sikora trey with 2:40 left before the half, and the next time down the floor Jones hit another three to give the visitors their first lead of the game at 30-29, which was also the halftime score.
Puget Sound went on an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of the third quarter and the Geoducks were forced to play from behind the rest of the game. They trailed by nine entering the third quarter and got within five points on several occasions but couldn't make up the deficit.
Sikora came off of the bench to hit a trio of three-point shots on the way to 13 points, and Alexcis Higginbotham also scored 13 for the Geoducks. Amber Jones added 10 points and Merrily Jones paced the team with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Evergreen shot 38 percent overall but just 59 percent (10-for-17) from the foul line.
Puget Sound, which shot 32 percent overall and 90 percent (18-for-20) at the foul line, was led by RaeAnn Allen with 15 points and Jamie Lange with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Geoducks return to action on Friday, Dec. 14, when they play the Oregon Tech Owls in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game in Klamath Falls, Ore.
