NU Splits with Loggers to Open Season
TACOMA, Wash. – Northwest University opened their 2018 season with a split of their doubleheader with the University of Puget Sound this afternoon. NU took the first game, 4-1 and the Loggers came back in the second game to defeat the Eagles, 3-2.
Game 1 – Northwest U 4, Puget Sound 1
The Eagles put together an 8 hit attack with two key two run hits by Yeawa Asabi and Alicia Loiler to defeat the Loggers 4-1 to open their season. Senior pitcher, Hannah Yelas pitched a 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts to earn the win.
Northwest’s first runs came in the 3
rd inning when sophomore, Yeawa Asabi, came up with a two out, 2-run double, driving in Courtney Heard who had led off the inning with single to left field. The Eagles scored two more runs in the 5
th inning when Sammi Caron singled to right field and Asabi walked with two out. Alicia Loiler then singled to right field driving in Caron and Asabi to put NU up 4-0.
Puget Sound scored one run in the bottom of the 7
th when Marissa Oda hit a solo home run with two out. NU then got pinch hitter Abby Brondos to pop out giving the Eagles their first win of the 2018 season.
Alicia Loiler led Northwest U (1-0) going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Yeawa Asabi was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and teammate Sammi Caron was 2 for 3 and scored two runs.
Puget Sound (1-3-1) was led by Marissa Oda who went 2 for 3 including the home run. Jessica Gott (1-2) took the loss for the Loggers going 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits.
Game 1 – UPS 3, Eagles 2
NU’s Rachel Hawley went 7 innings giving up just 3 hits, but Puget Sound came through with the winning run in the 6
th inning for the 3-2 win in the second game.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 3
rd inning when Darian Godfrey scored from second on an infield single by Yeawa Asabi and an error by the Loggers. Puget Sound then took a 2-1 lead in the 4
th inning when Amanda Fehr singled in Erica Gott who had led off the inning with a double to left. Mcke Johnson then doubled in Marissa Oda who had reached base on a fielder’s choice.
Maggie Harshaw hit a two out double in the 6
th inning and layer scored on a single up the middle by Mikayla Wells to tie the game at 2-2. UPS then came back in their half of the 6
th on a bases loaded walk for the game winner.
Mikayla Wells went 2 for 3 with one RBI for Northwest U (1-1) and teammate Maggie Harshaw was 2 for 3 and score a run for the Eagles who totaled 7 hits for the game. Rachel Hawley (0-1) took the loss in the circle going 6 innings, giving up 3 hits but issued 10 walks.
Puget Sound’s (2-3-1) Amanda Fehr went 1 for 2 with one RBI and Mcke Johnson was 1 for 3 with one RBI. Kasey Stern (1-1) earned the win in the circle for the Loggers going 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, no walks and added one strikeout.
