MINOT, N.D. - On Day 2 of the Bubble Invite, the University of Providence softball team split games against two different NCAA Division II opponents. UP began the day with a 5-1 win over University of Minnesota Crookston with Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) pitching a second straight complete game.

The Lady Argos faced Minnesota State University Moorhead for their second time of the tournament. UP beat the Dragons the day before 9-1 on Day 1 to start off the season, however, this matchup had a different outcome ending in a 7-11 loss.

GAME 1

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Lady Argo’s bats came alive in the third and fourth innings. At the top of the third, Karlie Southworth (SO/Lewiston, Mont) and Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) hit a single to get on base. Second baseman Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) was next up to bat, hitting a double to left center field which drove in 2 RBIs for a 2-0 lead. Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) followed with a single bringing in Canibeyaz for another run.
  • After holding off the Golden Eagles for the bottom of the third, a walk and a single brought back UP’s offensive momentum in the top of the fourth. Southworth hit another single to bring in another run for a 4-0 lead.

AT THE PLATE
  • Henderson, Gonzalez, and Canibeyaz continue to lead the Lady Argo at the plate, combining for 4 of the team’s 9 hits, and 4 of the team’s 5 RBI.
  • Canibeyaz had a particularly strong game, going 2-4 from the plate while scoring 1 run and driving in three others.
  • Southworth also showcased a dangerous bat, going 2-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

IN THE CIRCLE
  • Kristina George held her own for a full seven innings. After pitching a 1-hitting the previous day, she did allow 9 this time, but only 1 run scored, and she struck out 6 batters.
  • George is now 2-0 in 2 starts.

GAME 2

KEY MOMENTS
  • A 6-run second inning for MSU-Moorehead gave the Lady Argos their first deficit of the season, one in which UP would spend the rest of the game trying to match.
  • After a slow start offensively, the Lady Argos fought back to tie it up at the top of the fifth. Canibeyaz got things started by getting on base on a fielder’s choice. Gonzales followed with an RBI single and Briauna Carter (JR/Kearns, Utah) hit another single to bring the score 7-3.
  • A walk and a single kept that run going and forced MSU-Moorhead into a pitching change. That did change anything for the Lady Argos, who answered with another RBI single from Southworth and then drew three walks to tie the game at 7-7.

AT THE PLATE
  • Southworth continued to have a hot bat, going 3-4 at the plate with 2 RBI, 1 run, and a double.
  • Gonzales also did some damage, going 2-5 and racking in 2 runs for the Lady Argos.
  • As the score suggests, MSUM outhit UP, getting on base 17 times to UP’s 10.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • George got a rest for the game and freshman KJ Schweikerts and transfers Ashton Bell and Briauna Carter each made their first appearance of the season and pitched 2 innings.
  • Carter took the loss for UP, allowing 4 runs while getting 1 strikeout.
  • The most successful of the three was Bell, who only let up 1 run and 1 walk in two innings.
