NU's Yeawa Asabi had a 2 for 4 day at the plate today
Eagles Drop Two in Cavalier Classic
PORTLAND, Ore. - The NU Eagles took on two NCAA Division II teams today and dropped close contests in each game on a cool and cloudy day at Porter Park.
Game 1 – Western Oregon 2, Eagles 1
Western Oregon came up with two runs in the second inning which would hold up as they would go on to edge the NU Eagles, 2-1 in the first game of the Cavalier Classic this morning.
The Wolves from Monmouth, Oregon, score their runs in the bottom of the second inning on a one run triple and a single to take the early lead.
Northwest U got one run back in their half of the 4th inning when Yeawa Asabi singled in Sammi Caron from third base.
Neither team would be able to score the remainder of the game as the pitchers from both teams would throw strong innings with each giving up a total of three hits each. Rachel Hawley took the loss throwing 6 strong innings, giving up the three hits and two runs.
Yeawa Asabi, Alicia Loiler and Laurissa Lee got the three hits for northwest U (1-4) as the defense played errorless softball. Asabi had the lone RBI for the Eagles.
Haley Fabian earned the win in the circle for Western Oregon (8-7) with Kennedy Coy and Ayanna Arceneaux both going 1 for 2 with each batting in a RBI.
Game 2 – Concordia 3, NU 2
The Cavaliers capitalized on a 5th inning throwing error by the Eagles to bring across the winning run as Concordia would post a 3-2 victory on their home field in the second game of the Cavalier Classic for Northwest U.
With the game tied going into the 5th inning, Macy Besuyen hit a two out double down the left field line to get on base. She then scored on an eagle throwing error to score what would be the winning run for the Cavs.
Concordia had taken an early 1-0 lead in the first inning scoring a run off a two out double by Linda Gherir scoring Macy Besuyen who had walked earlier.
NU came back in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead as Yeawa Asabi came up with a timely triple to right field scoring Sammi Caron and Darian Godfrey.
The Cavs came back in their half of the third to tie the game at 2-2 when Adrianna Rupright singled to left field bringing in Besuyen.
Senior Hannah Yelas pitched a solid game going 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and one earned run for the Eagles (1-5). Yeawa Asabi capped off her day with a 1 for 3 game with 2 RBI and Sammi Caron went 2 for 3 and scored a run for the Eagles.
Concordia’s (9-6) Mckenzie Smith threw a 3-hitter for the Cavs, striking out 7 Eagles and giving up 2 walks. Adrianna Rupright and Linda Gherir both went 1 for 3 from the plate with 1 RBI a piece.
Northwest U will resume play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. when they take on Concordia again and finish play in the tournament with St. Martin’s at 3 p.m., before returning to Kirkland.
