College of Idaho Men’s Basketball Named Team of the Week
LA GRANDE, Ore. –The College of Idaho men’s basketball team has been named the “Team of the Week” for Feb. 19-25, the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced.
The No. 4 ranked and regular season champion Yotes entered the week as No.1 seed in the men’s basketball post season tournament and won in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to advance to the tournament title game on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday in the quarterfinals CI withstood a 30-9 run by the visiting Northwest Eagles to come away with a hard fought 62-56 win. Talon Pinckney scored a game-high 19 points; including a career-high six 3-pointers and teammate Nate Bruneel added 13 points all in the second half. Player of the year candidate Aziz Leeks was held to just three points but had 14 rebounds in the win.
On Saturday CI hosted Southern Oregon University in one semifinal matchup of the tournament and came away with a 67-50 win. It was the second time in a span of eight days that the Yotes held SOU to 50 points which was 33.7 points below their average of 83.7 per game. Balanced scoring helped secure the win with Pinckney and Roosevelt Adams each scoring 14 points. Leeks added 13 points and seven boards.
College of Idaho (26-6, 18-2 CCC) will host Warner Pacific University on Tuesday in the championship game of the CCC Tournament presented by U.S. Bank. Warner, the No. 2 seed was victorious over Oregon Tech 73-72 in the other semifinal contest.
