EOU Comes Back From 16-Point Deficit, Wins in Double Overtime Thriller 2/2/2018 11:50:45 PM LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon men's basketball team won a Quinn Coliseum classic on Friday, beating Northwest 97-93 in double overtime. There were 10 ties and eight lead changes as both teams fought hard until the last second, but the Mountaineers (19-4, 11-4 CCC) were the side to come up with the win in the Cascade Collegiate Conference battle. It was an absolute thriller as the Mounties faced a tough Northwest team. The Mounties always managed to come back when the hopes were lost and in the end, earned a hard-fought win. Sophomore guard Max McCullough played for 50 minutes and was the top scorer with 24 points. Senior wing Austin Winegar played 43 minutes, scored 22 and freshman guard Jordan May scored 20 in 48 minutes. Senior guard Cole Ashby was also on the court for 40 minutes making clutch shots late in the game with 17 points. After coming back from a 16-point deficit, the Mounties got the lead in the second half. After a couple of ties and lead changes, Northwest was on top in the final seconds of the game but McCullough hit a clutch shot with nine seconds left to take the game to overtime. The first overtime period was neck and neck as the Mounties made their free-throws and Northwest hit a three pointer with three seconds left to take the game to double overtime. The second overtime period was as exciting as the first one, but the Mounties took charge. The team stayed calm, shooting 23-for-27 from the free-throw line, despite great efforts by the Northwest Eagles. Tre Benton had a big game on the Northwest side, scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Christian Hakilimali made cold-blooded shots especially late in the game, scoring 20 points with eight rebounds while Justin Martion was extremely efficient scoring 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting.
